The Problem

WHERE THINGS STOOD BEFORE

Jacqui called me in tears. She wasn't ringing to book a training session — she was ringing to ask me to help rehome Candy. Her dog had just bitten her son Kyle, and Jacqui had reached the point where she couldn't see another way out.

Candy had been aggressive since she was a puppy. Six bites in total. She couldn't stand people in her space, reacted to anyone walking past the house, and had got so bad that Jacqui had covered her windows to stop her going off at passers-by. Both Candy and her brother Bimbo hadn't been walked properly in a long time — the owners had been avoiding the problem rather than solving it, which is completely understandable when you're that deep in it.

The assumption was that Candy was simply aggressive. That she was a dangerous dog. That she was beyond help.

Dan's Diagnosis

After an emergency consultation, I diagnosed something very different. Candy wasn't aggressive — she was terrified. She had been living in fight or flight mode her entire life, driven by extreme nerve. She was piggybacking off her brother Bimbo for confidence, and without him she had nothing to fall back on. Every reaction, every bite — it was fear, not malice. Getting that diagnosis right changed everything about the approach.

5-WEEK REACTIVITY & AGGRESSION PROGRAMME

EMERGENCY CONSULTWeek 1

Diagnosis — It Wasn't Aggression

After Jacqui's call, I came out for an emergency consultation. Both dogs were muzzled and attempted to bite me during that first session. I assessed Candy's behaviour and identified the root cause: extreme nerve and chronic fight-or-flight, not dominance or aggression. Rather than managing a dangerous dog, we were rehabilitating a terrified one.

FOUNDATIONWeeks 2–3

Building Calm, Communication & Confidence

The early sessions focused on building a foundation of calm and clear communication with both dogs. We worked on leash handling, engagement, and giving Candy a structure she could actually feel safe within. Bimbo responded quickly — Candy took more time and patience, but the progress was consistent.

EXPOSUREWeeks 4–5

Real Environments, Real Triggers

Once the foundation was solid, we introduced controlled exposure to real-world triggers — public spaces, other dogs, strangers. Both Candy and Bimbo started going to the pub with the family. Multiple walks a day became the norm. The owners were finally able to enjoy the walks rather than dread them.

Key Milestone

KYLE WALKS THE DOG THAT BIT HIM

At session 4, Jacqui's son Kyle — who Candy had previously bitten — came to work with us. He was understandably nervous. I explained what had changed in Candy, what to expect, and what to do. He listened, followed the instructions, and within that session Kyle was walking Candy to heel, getting her to jump the ramps, and walking side by side with his own dog — the same dog Candy had previously fought with. No reaction. No incident. Just a dog doing her job.

The Results

WHERE THEY ARE NOW

DAILY WALKS — BOTH DOGS

Neither dog had been walked properly in months. Now both Candy and Bimbo are going out multiple times a day, and the family actually enjoy it.

PUB VISITS & PUBLIC SPACES

The family can take both dogs to the pub. Candy — who once couldn't be near strangers — is calm and manageable in busy environments.

KYLE & CANDY REUNITED

Jacqui's son Kyle, who Candy previously bit, walked her to heel, got her jumping ramps, and walked side by side with his own dog. No reaction.

WINDOWS UNCOVERED

Jacqui had covered her windows to stop Candy reacting to people outside. That's no longer necessary. The house feels different.

CORRECT DIAGNOSIS

Candy was labelled aggressive and nearly rehomed. The real issue was extreme nerve. Getting that right changed everything about the approach.

REHOMING AVOIDED

Jacqui called to rehome Candy. Six weeks later, Candy is still home — and the family have a future with both dogs they didn't think was possible.

"After 2 years we are starting to feel as we have a future with them being able to take them out... Candy has had issues from a pup, always aggressive and even biting from a pup, she has bitten 6 people in total... until your help they have not been able to go out."

Dan's Note

"Every dog I work with has a story behind the behaviour. Candy's wasn't aggression — it was fear. Getting that diagnosis right is the difference between a dog that gets rehomed and a dog that gets its life back."
